the conference we had no business hosting

Kinship-Post-pic1It was spring of last year, a couple of months after we released our devotional, 31 Days of Prayer for the Dreamer and the Doer, that I received an email from a gal who was the college director at her church. She shared that one of the girls in her ministry started a bible study in her sorority using our devotional and she wanted to know how to order more. THEN she shared what college and it was 5 miles from my house. I just about fell out of my chair. I asked if could stop in one night at the bible study and just listen in.

I was so overwhelmed. THESE GIRLS….THEY were dreamers and doers. They weren’t jaded yet, bound by mortgages, jobs, kids or burdened by the weight of life. They had so much possibility ahead of them. The college age wasn’t even on our radar but the wheels were turning as God was expanding our vision.

As I listened in on their conversations, fears, questions, dreams – I longed to gather them, pour into them and maybe in some way to encourage them to stay clear of the hinderances that hold so many of us back for way to long. Since this is our mission with The {Well} Studio, Kelly and I began to pray and once we believed the Lord was cracking the door open for us to walk through, we gathered a little team of women and started planning a gathering – we called it Kinship – our hope was to gather 100-125 college women, model for them what it is like for women to have candid conversations about identity, comparison, dreams, career and community – all in light of how God desires us to live. Planning was going so well.

We had an amazing committee of ROCKSTARS, our panel of speakers had incredible stories, sponsors were saying yes……

BUT tickets weren’t selling very fast. We were told “don’t worry, this age waits til the last minute”

That’s not how I roll.

The Wednesday before the event I woke up with less than half the tickets sold and thought “WHAT WERE WE THINKING? We have no business hosting an event for college girls. We don’t even KNOW any college girls!” I seriously considered postponing the event until the spring. I didn’t know what the Lord wanted me to do, so I laid in bed until I did.

But God.

He kept making it very clear to me that HE wanted to show off – remind me WHO he is and HIS place in all this dreaming. The dreamer in me dreams big dreams and the doer in me makes them happen – often times without any (recognized) help from the Lord. But not this time. He is a jealous God and wanted ALL recognition and credit.

So we decided to go through with it….and tickets began to sell. And I can never be reminded enough that…

God loves to use the ill equipped and those without an audience. little-bird

The day blew me away. I spent most of it with teary eyes as I watched hope delivered through stories of pain, women encouraged to pray about their future and seeing the gospel clearly shared. Not one ounce of it could have been done alone without the body of Christ – these girls…..

As one of my friends says, “watching your friends use their gifts to serve the Lord is like a glimpse of heaven.”

I know what she means. I don’t want to dream and do alone. WE don’t want YOU to dream and do alone. So this year, we want to gather community in more strategic ways.

FACEBOOK GROUP – this is an easy way to connect online. We know not everyone has facebook but for those who do lets connect, collaborate and cheer one another on over in The Well Collective Facebook Group! This space can be used to ask for prayer, advice, tips, encouragement. We know there are so many groups out there, but we at least want a central place we can all get to know each other!

EVENTS & EXPERIENCES – We don’t know exactly what this looks like, it may include more book bashes, more events in Dallas and Austin, but we do know it includes an intimate gathering this fall in one of my most favorite places in this country. I know teasers are annoying, but trust me on this one – when we have the details we will let you know. I am giddy because the Lord has clearly held us back the last two years on planning something like this and we confidently believe He is releasing us to dream and plan – I CAN’T IMAGINE what He has in store if He has had us wait this long. SOOOOOOO, if you are not on our email list, sign up because our S{well} News readers will be the very first to know! (we promise not to send too many emails – we aren’t even in good rhythm to do that – haha!)

What is God asking you to do that you “feel” you are ill equipped or not “connected” enough to do?

Goodness gracious! I’m overwhelmed! At the beauty and grace in that place! Thank you, Jenn, for saying yes to the conference… what a blessing it was to the girls! They are a little closer to understanding how dearly loved they are by God and designed for a unique purpose! You’re amazing!

As a father and a husband. I read the {Well Studio emails and blog posts from time to time. That’s is a great testimony and how God loves to push us toward the uncomfortable while making us grow closer to him at the same time.

Derek! This makes me so happy that you stop by from time to time – I have always been such an advocate of creating a space that doesn’t promote women’s empowerment to a point that men feel alienated. YOU MADE MY DAY! Welcome:) thanks for saying “hi”:) My most uncomfortable moments are my most intimate with Jesus:) jenn

I love this post. It reminds me that even you who have accomplished so much, and seem so brave and confident, have doubts that crop up. I have so many dreams, but tend to stumble before I DO, letting myself get caught in the “is this or isn’t this from God” cycle, even when it’s pretty clear is He is saying “Go and DO!” I’ve gifted your book to so many amazing ladies and I regularly go back through it. Thanks for the encouragement here!
